Abstract

Introduction: Access to specialized oral surgery training for non-traditional applicants and foreign-trained graduates (outside the United States and Canada) is limited. The Minor Oral Surgery (MOS) program at Boston University offers a unique one-year opportunity for these individuals to gain hands-on oral surgery experience and be a part of a broader oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) training program

Objective: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the MOS program in augmenting the clinical and didactic proficiency of its participants, with a focus on enhancing their readiness for more advanced oral surgery endeavors. Additionally, it examines whether the program fosters a more conducive learning environment for both OMS and MOS residents.

Methods: A comprehensive survey was conducted among five alumni of the MOS program to gather insights into their self-assessed competence and the practical skills acquired during their training. Additionally, feedback was solicited from four residents who completed the oral and maxillofacial surgery residency, specifically focusing on their interactions and observations regarding MOS participants' impact on the OMS program.

Results: On average, MOS participants reported being confident in performing basic dentoalveolar procedures, including extraction of impacted wisdom teeth, pre-prosthetic soft-tissue and hard-tissue corrections, and simple biopsies. Respondents also reported increased confidence in the management of medically compromised patients as well as the management of out-patient medical emergencies. OMS residents had reported on average that the presence of the MOS program had improved their OMS residency experience, as well as being overall valuable to the OMS residency program.

Conclusion: The MOS program emerges as a valuable adjunct to conventional hospital-based OMS residency training. It not only enriches the clinical repertoire of its participants but also fosters a collaborative learning environment with OMS residents, ultimately aiming to elevate clinical competencies and support the pursuit of advanced OMFS residency placements.
