The topic of mandibular reconstruction has been the subject of much debate among oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Due to continued advancements such as tissue engineering, bone graft materials, new biologics and microvascular reconstruction, an opportunity exists to build significant enhancements in treating segmental mandibular defects. This class aims to explore the literature on mandibular reconstruction for the critical size defect of 6 cm or more, as this defect size historically has been considered a critical demarcating size regarding reconstructive options. The comprehensive overview will detail the fundamentals of segmental mandibular reconstruction, highlighting both nonvascularized and vascularized reconstruction, including their indications, contraindications and benefits. Discussions also will include examples of mandibular defects.

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
