Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) often are present in patients who are undergoing orthognathic surgery, and patients seeking care for TMD also may require orthognathic surgery. Traditionally these conditions were treated separately. Recent data and technological advances have created pathways for these surgeries to be done at the same encounter, decreasing the duration of care, improving patient convenience and lowering risk from general anesthesia. This course will present indications, contraindications, planning, techniques, risks, benefits and complications related to care of this patient population.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Discuss indications for combined TMJ-orthognathic surgery.
Describe the steps in planning for a combined surgery.
Explain the risks and benefits of the combined operation.
Determine the differences between a traditional orthognathic surgery and a combined TMJ-orthognathic surgery.
