Oral premalignant lesions and oral cancer constitute a significant portion of the pathology referrals made to both private-practice and hospital-based oral surgeons. This course will teach participants to recognize the variable presentations of oral precancerous lesions and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Biopsy techniques – including site selection, interpretation of pathology results and management of patients with biopsy-supported dysplasia – will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Identify oral premalignant conditions, including leukoplakia, erythroplakia, proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, actinic cheilitis, lichen planus and oral submucous fibrosis.
Describe the different clinical presentations of oral squamous cell carcinoma.
Determine the appropriate biopsy site and technique for accurate diagnosis.
Explain the different degrees of oral dysplasia and demonstrate how oral dysplastic lesions are managed.
