SSOD38 - Emergency Surgical Airway: An Organized Approach to Chaos

This course will describe a practical approach to management of the difficult airway and provide clinical context, pearls and pragmatism to the widely studied difficult airway algorithm. Discussions will include a review the uses of airway adjuncts and office and/or operating room team management. Emphasis will be placed on pre-operative evaluation, preparation and crisis avoidance, and different techniques for the surgical airway will be described and reviewed.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Develop a multidisciplinary plan for the known difficult airway, which includes adjuncts, surgeon assist and the surgical airway.
  2. Determine how to use airway adjuncts to de-escalate an emergent surgical airway to an urgent surgical airway.
  3. Explain the steps to performing a surgical airway.
