Dr. Brett L. Ferguson from Kansas City, Missouri, is a Lane College Cum Laude Graduate with a major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry in 1975.
Dr. Ferguson graduated in 1981 as a Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Missouri - Kansas City, in 1986 he became a resident in the 48-month program at UMKC Oral Maxillofacial Surgery program.
With thirty-three years of experience in oral maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Ferguson made history when he became the first African-American Chairman of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery at Truman Medical Center, now University Health, prior to this appointment he was the OMS program director. He is also the Chairman of the Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry. In 2009 and 2013, the Graduate Training Program was awarded the accreditation status of approval without reporting requirements.
Dr. Ferguson’s other successful engagements are becoming a Diplomate of ABOMS and being certified through 2025. Dr. Brett Ferguson is a past president of the Medical/Dental Staff at University Health, a Level I Trauma Hospital with 3000 employees and 500+ physicians on the medical staff. He has been invited to lecture nationally and internationally and has performed surgery on trips to Europe, China, and Africa. In addition, he has been appointed to the AO/ASIF maxillofacial trauma educators of North America, appointed to the faculty recruitment and retention committee of AAOMS, and was a featured clinician in the AAOMS-sponsored video on OMS as a career which was sent to every dental school in the United States. He has been appointed to the Examiner Committee of the ABOMS. Was, also, appointed to the AAOMS Committee on Resident Education and Training serving as chairman. He also was appointed and chaired the Committee on Hospital and Interprofessional Affairs. Dr. Ferguson was appointed chair of the Commission on Resident Education, responsible for setting national educational standards. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Truman Medical Center. Dr. Ferguson Received Top Doctor in 2012 by Ingram’s Magazine.
He has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of ABOMS, AAOMS, IAOMS, American College of Dentists, Midwest Society of OMS, Missouri Society of OMS, (past president), Greater Kansas City Society OMS, ADA, Missouri Dental Association, and Greater Kansas City Dental Society. Dr. Ferguson was one of six UMKC faculties chosen to work with the media department for advertisement of the University with billboards placed around the metropolitan area. He has served as President of the Rinehart Foundation, the endowment of UMKC School of Dentistry, with a $20 million corpus. Dr. Ferguson served two consecutive terms as Treasurer of AAOMS in 2011 and 2012 and was elected Vice President in 2015, President–Elect in September 2016. Dr. Ferguson was inducted into the International College of Dentists and was selected to be an ACS member. Dr. Brett L. Ferguson served as the 100th Centennial President of AAOMS in 2018 and is the first African American so elected.
