Dr. Melissa Amundson DDS MPH FACS started her career in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Pennsylvania where she completed an Internship. She completed her residenct at The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in 2012. In 2015, she returned to an academic setting and completed her fellowship training in Advanced Craniomaxillofacial Surgery and Trauma in Portland, Oregon at the Head and Neck Institute/Legacy Emanuel Hospital. She completed her Master’s in Public Health at the University of Florida in 2020. She is faculty at the Florida State University College of Medicine where her practice is focused on Maxillofacial Trauma and Reconstruction.
She is volunteer faculty at Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto, Nigeria. She is also a consulting surgeon for Médecins Sans Frontiers and is actively involved in both noma reconstruction and research in Sokoto, Nigeria. Her areas of interest include maxillofacial trauma, secondary reconstruction, and humanitarian/global surgery.
Dr Amundson is a Fellow of both the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the American College of Surgeons, Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and a Board Regent for the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. She has been active in Global/Humanitarian Surgery since 2013. She has authored/co-authored several articles and chapters on Craniomaxillofacial Trauma. She is currently a full time hospital based maxillofacial trauma surgeon at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in Tallahassee, Florida.
