Osteomyelitis, osteoradionecrosis (ORN) and medication-related osteonecrosis of the Jaws (MRONJ) require multidisciplinary treatment and communication between the different medical specialties because each involves a unique treatment protocol and different therapeutic approaches. This course will discuss each disease's pathogenesis, classification and medical and surgical management and focus on differentiating between them. Recent advances in diagnosis, medical therapy and surgical treatment will be addresses as well as the pitfalls and how to avoid complications in the surgical management of each disease.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Discuss the different pathophysiological mechanisms of osteomyelitis, ORN and MRONJ.
  2. Explain the current classification system of each disease and discuss the appropriate treatment for each class.
  3. Determine the new molecular alteration identified for each disease.
  4. Discuss the rule of medical therapy for each entity.
  5. Analyze the surgical treatment for each disease process and the challenges associated with reconstructing the defects after surgery.
