SSOD47 - Performing Effective Biopsies and the Importance of Communication Between the Surgeon and Pathologist

During residency training, OMSs are taught the fundamentals of biopsy techniques. As they continue in their careers, OMSs are exposed to a variety of less common pathologic conditions of the maxillofacial region. This course will address the important nuances of biopsy techniques and the essential communication necessary between the oral and maxillofacial surgeon and the oral pathologist. Focus will be placed on clinical decision-making skills needed to select appropriate biopsy techniques as well as samples for less commonly encountered conditions. In addition, a look at the communication between the OMS and pathologist will allow participants to develop a method for improving biopsy effectiveness aimed at minimizing nondiagnostic samples.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Describe a differential diagnosis to determine the most effective biopsy technique for lesions, cysts and tumors of the maxillofacial region.
  2. Recognize the various biopsy methods for lesions of major and minor salivary glands.
  3. Explain the benefits of communication between pathologist and surgeon to minimize the need for repeat biopsies.
