The use of TMJ alloplastic joint reconstruction has been validated, and demand has increased in adult patients over the years as the procedure has proven more reliable. This is a result of the predictability of successful subjective and objective outcomes and increased quality of life of patients. However, the procedure is very technique-sensitive, and the outcomes are strongly related to the experience of the surgeon. Not many oral surgeons feel confident performing this procedure, and only a few centers can provide this service efficiently and with clinical competence. The course will share the key steps for proper patient selection, planning, surgical pearls, postoperative management and management of complications for a successful and predictable outcome.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Discuss the importance of proper patient selection for alloplastic TMJ reconstruction.
Explain protocol for planning an alloplastic TMJ reconstruction with or without concomitant orthognathic surgery.
Identify and apply surgical pearls for a successful and predictable outcome in TMJ reconstruction.
Describe the postoperative management for patients who underwent alloplastic TMJ reconstruction.
Analyze the most common complications associated with alloplastic TMJ reconstruction, and discuss how to manage them.
