SSOD56 - How to Incorporate Computer-Assisted Surgery and Navigation in Craniomaxillofacial Surgery

Computer-assisted surgery, also known as virtual surgical planning (VSP) and computer-assisted surgical navigation, is common practice in most oral and maxillofacial surgeries. The first application of these technologies was in the late 1980s. The ability to virtually perform bony cuts – shifting bone parts and providing patient-specific cutting guides – allows a patient-specific simulation of complex bony surgeries. Both modalities have been applied to improve patient outcomes. The class will focus primarily on the technical aspects of VSP and computer navigation surgeries to enhance the predictability of planning and outcome.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Recognize the need of computer-assisted surgical planning and/or computer-assisted navigation surgery.
  2. Determine the different applications of computer assisted surgical planning, computer assisted navigation and intraoperative computed tomography scans (O-arm).
  3. Describe the digital workflow for computer-assisted surgical planning.
