Gun violence is an epidemic in the United States. OMSs often are called upon to stabilize gunshot wounds to the soft and hard tissues of the head and neck and then are involved in the patient’s short-term and long-term management. These patients commonly have complex needs that require a multidisciplinary team approach to manage multiple surgeries and treatments, to address mental health needs and to provide for rehabilitation services. This session will discuss how VSP and other modern techniques can be used to help enhance the outcomes of GSW patients.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Describe the steps for the initial management of a gunshot wound to the head and neck.
  2. Determine how defects in different subunits of the maxillofacial complex can be reconstructed.
  3. Explain the mechanism of a ballistic injury and how this creates damage to the patient.
