Genomic testing reveals how effective patients are able to metabolize and utilize their medications and can be important data for patient assessment prior to anesthesia and surgery. This course will review genomic implications of commonly used clinical medications by OMSs as well as medications taken by the patient population. Discussion will give insight to the emerging philosophy of gene analysis to optimize medication use.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
List the three categories of results for gene analysis of medication metabolism.
Describe the patent population at risk for adverse opioid reaction and addiction potential.
Indicate the genes associated with addiction.
Identify medications at risk in a patent's genomic analysis.
Explain the function of the genes associated with addiction.
