Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) has emerged as a challenging clinical problem since its initial description in 2003. As understanding of MRONJ has increased, so too has the incidence owing to longer life expectancies and the development of novel therapeutics that adversely impact bone metabolism. OMSs must thus be well-versed in all aspects of management of this disease. This course will provide a comprehensive summary of MRONJ that can equip attendees with the knowledge and tools to confidently manage all stages of MRONJ. Discussions will review the pathophysiology, strategies for both surgical and non-surgical management and appraisal of the current literature and emerging treatments. Case presentations will showcase successful outcomes and pitfalls learned from challenging cases.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Discuss the pathophysiology and disease mechanisms of MRONJ.
Describe how to counsel patients regarding surgical and non-surgical management of MRONJ.
Analyze the current literature regarding expected outcomes and emerging treatments.
