Daniel M. Laskin Professor and Head, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery University of Illinois Chicago Chicago, Illinois
Injuries to the inferior alveolar and lingual nerves may commonly occur following routine procedures performed by the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. There are no established guidelines for patient management in the event of a nerve injury, which results in a knowledge gap for the clinician facing this scenario. This session will explore the current best practice guidelines for the OMS in terms of diagnosis, documentation, referral and management of nerve injuries in dentoalveolar surgery.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Determine when advanced nerve imaging is required prior to dentoalveolar surgery.
Evaluate and document a nerve injury in the practice and refer patients for expert nerve assessment and microneurosurgery.
