Dr. Melissa Amundson received her bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (’99) followed by her BDS and DDS from the University of Illinois-Chicago (’07). She started her career in OMFS with an internship at the University of Pennsylvania followed by her residency at The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital (’12). In 2015, she returned to an academic setting and completed her fellowship in Advanced Craniomaxillofacial Surgery and Trauma in Portland, Oregon at the Head and Neck Institute/Legacy Emanuel Hospital followed by her Master’s in Public Health at the University of Florida in 2020.
Her professional interests include maxillofacial trauma and secondary reconstruction along with humanitarian surgery. She is currently a full time hospital based maxillofacial trauma surgeon at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital-Florida State University College of Medicine. Her extensive international experience has includes long-term projects in Honduras, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. She is currently a consultant surgeon for Medicines Sans Frontiers/Doctors Without Borders and Mercy Ships along with American College of Surgery Committee Appointments for Health Outreach Program for Equity on Global Surgery (H.O.P.E) and International Relations.
Dr. Amundson is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Vice President of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. She is the recipient of the Rising Star Award ’22 (University of Illinois), ICARE Award ’22 (Tallahassee), and the Luminary Award ’25 (University of Wisconsin).
